Special programmes at Heretaunga College in Upper Hutt
School of Hospitality
This is an exciting course offering students the opportunity of a tertiary training programme in a school setting. Heretaunga College is the first school in the country to be accredited to offer a full Level 3 Hospitality Certificate. It is taught on the Heretaunga College campus in purpose built commercial facilities by highly qualified teachers with industry experience.
The course aims for its students are:
- To achieve their Level 3 Certificate in Cookery Level 3 and NCEA Level 3.
- To gain hands-on practical training in the cookery and food and beverage sectors.
- To ensure students are work ready for further tertiary study or a modern apprenticeship.
- To gain full-time or part-time employment in the hospitality or service industries.
Uniform is important for Health and Safety as well as to show pride in yourself and the School of Hospitality. When practical or industry work is taking place students are to wear white and blue small checker chef pants, white chef jacket, black apron, black skull cap, and sturdy leather lace up shoes.
Golf Academy
Our Golf Academy is designed to give students an opportunity to study in our High School Programme while developing their golfing skills in a structured programme. All Golf Academy students are given access to the Royal Wellington Golf Club which is in Heretaunga. This wonderful course and facilities are a short distance from the school.
The golf club will provide coaching once a week and entry to their competitions. Students will also be able to compete for the school in golf tournaments. A teacher will work with the academy students to ensure that they are able to access all the training and games. They will work as a liaison between the school and the club to ensure that the student is achieving the desired outcomes both at school and in their golf.
Equestrian
The school is ideally located in an area of Wellington where equestrian activities are popular. Many families have small properties that are capable of running horses. It is possible to homestay students in these families.
The school can make the introductions required to enable a student to pursue their interest in horse riding while in New Zealand. An instructor can be arranged. Students are able to ride for fun or take part in local competitions. Students can enjoy this option if they are in the High School Programme, English Language School or Catering Academy.
Elite Sports Programme
The aim of the programme is to give students more opportunities to succeed in sport. Students take part in regular strength and conditioning training, specialist sport training if they play Hockey/Basketball/Rugby/Netball/Football. We can offer places in other sports if the numbers are great enough.
Leadership training, looking at coaching and leadership in sport as well as being exposed to a variety of different training methods such as boxing, speed and agility, swimming, circuits, resistance training, plyometrics, aerobic endurance and team sports is included. Regular physical testing is an important part of the course which allows us to monitor the student’s development as the year goes on.
