Napier Girls' High School, Napier (13 - 18 year old)

Locations

Napier Girls’ High School provides high quality all-round education to young women.  The school is built on top of Bluff Hill and has been a significant icon in Napier for 125 years.  The fee structure is very competitive for a quality international experience.  A hostel on the school site accommodates 160 girls including up to 12 international students.  It provides a unique experience.  Strong traditions have been established that are a big part of the school today. The Old Girls continue to contribute, actively participating in events and a number of celebrations held each year.

The school has high academic and personal expectations of students.  Results in national examinations exceed those of other similar schools year after year and large numbers of students are involved in co-curricular activities.  There are a huge variety of opportunities available in sport, music and cultural areas.  All students are encouraged to participate.  Vertical forms and a House system ensure students mix with a wide variety of people of different ages and interests.  They develop confidence and personal skills and build strong loyalties to their school.  Staff enjoy the friendly, respectful relationships with students and the caring supportive environment.

Napier Girls’ High School places a strong emphasis on teaching and learning. There are excellent teaching and learning facilities and a safe environment for students to develop the skills necessary for the future. Students are encouraged to make the most of all the opportunities on offer and enjoy their time here.

Hawkes Bay is the province in which the city of Napier is located.  Hawkes Bay's population is approximately 100,000 and it is known for its bountiful produce. Hawkes Bay not only produces fruit on a large scale but it is also known for its extensive farming and increasing dairying. The region has a large fishing industry and a growing wine industry which has been acknowledged on the world stage. The temperate climate of "The Bay" is the envy of New Zealand and Napier is known especially for its Art Deco heritage, cultural events, restaurants and shops.

Many girls from countries all over the world attend as International Students. We welcome them and work hard to ensure that they enjoy their time. Please view the video and see some of our girls in action.

The International staff are caring and supportive.  Our goal is for you to have “The time of your life”.

Study at Napier Girls' High School

The New Zealand Curriculum specifies eight learning areas:

The vision of the New Zealand Curriculum states that ‘Young People will be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. To develop students to meet this vision, Napier Girls' High School is working on Values, Key Competencies, Principles and Achievement Objectives in Learning Areas.

The eight areas are: English, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Learning Languages, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Science, an Technology

The learning associated with each area is a part of a broad, general education and lays a foundation for specialisation. Napier Girls' High School encourages students to maintain this broad base to their learning through to Senior School.

Cultural
Napier Girls' High School offers a wide array of cultural activities. Students are encouraged to take part in activities outside the classroom and to develop their interests and talents. This is an essential part of developing into a well-rounded person. A combined musical production with Napier Boys' High School is enjoyed by senior students each year, and involves considerable staff input in the alternate years when we are responsible for the production. In addition there is a senior and junior drama production each year, staffing permitting.

Sport
On the sports field enthusiastic staff and parents put in many hours of coaching time for inter-school competition or for leisure time activity. The school participates in both the Spirit of Adventure and the Young New Zealanders' Challenge.

Young New Zealanders' Challenge
We have a very active group of young ladies aged 14 to 18 taking part in the Young New Zealander's Challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh award. The challenge is a voluntary, non competitive program of leisure activities, designed to offer a personal and individual challenge to each girl who decide to take part.

Young Enterprise
Year 12 and 13 students can take part in the Young Enterprise programme as an extra-curricular activity or alternatively Year 13 students may choose to take Business Studies as part of their Level 3 programme. As part of this programme students take part in the regional and national competitions available, striving for prizes available to both themselves and the school.
