Otaki College (age 13 - 18) Otaki

Locations

Otaki College is a Year 7 to 13 co-educational school in sunny Otaki, on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand. Otaki is a beautiful town, just 1 hour drive from Wellington and Palmerston North Cities. Otaki College is a school committed to meeting the needs of the community. Otaki is one of New Zealand's oldest communities with a rich history and our College has a proud record of service to it. Our graduates continue to achieve in a variety of areas. We believe this success is based on many factors unique to our school.

Otaki College has a lot to offer international students. The College offers many opportunities for overseas students to mix with our students in cultural, sporting and language activities. In this way the language comes alive for them and they also get to know about New Zealand customs.

Otaki College has many features, which make it a suitable school for students from other countries. It has 475 boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 18 and has the following aspects:

  • Individual attention - many of our senior classes contain fewer than nine students so each student receives extra contact with the teacher.
  • Ideal location combining town and country, a wide range of subjects and excellent teaching
  • Individual needs-based English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Outdoor Education Option
Many International Students are attracted to Otaki College to take part in the very successful Outdoor Education option. A large part of the Outdoor Education programme throughout the school involves practical activities on the river, in the bush, on rock cliffs, in the mountains as well as in the local environment. Many of these activities occur as afternoon outings, day trips and overnight camps and expeditions.

English lessons

English lessons are taught in the Overseas Students' Room every day. When a student comes to the College he/she is tested to find his/her English ability so we can put each student in the classes which suit the English level.

Study at Otaki College

Otaki College has very small senior classes and this leads to excellent national examination results. A wide range of subjects is available. Students can enter for national qualifications at Years 11, 12 and 13 and can enter the special Outdoor Academy.

Years 9 and 10: At years 9 and 10 students follow a programme with a compulsory core of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology, and Physical Education. In addition student may choose from a wide range of other subjects such as Art, Music, Japanese, Computing, and Practical Skills.

Years 11, 12 and 13: The qualification for Years 11, 12 and 13 students is the National Certificate in Educational Achievement. Each Achievement Standard contains ‘credits’ that build towards a National Certificate.
