Nelson Marlborough Institute English Language programme
NMIT’s English Language programme has developed a great reputation, in New Zealand and overseas, for its quality academic provision. NMIT is an official examination centre for the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate, as well as an IELTS testing outpost for Victoria University. As a student at NMIT, you will have many opportunities to mix with New Zealand students and use our extensive facilities.
NMIT’s English Language programme aims to identify and respond to the learning needs of individual learners. English is taught in a communicative way, giving you the opportunity to practise and apply your learning in a safe and challenging learning environment. We encourage you to be an active learner, to take language risks, and to take advantage of all opportunities to use the English you have learned.

Group Programmes
The English Language Centre can tailor a programme for groups of 10 students or more.
Our standard programme for groups is Active English.
This course is for International students and Permanent Residents who wish to study over 4 weeks (or longer). The course can be studied either full-time or part-time (mornings only) according to your group's requirements. During the course you will develop your English abilities in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar and functional English through theme work and take part in some activities outside of the classroom. This course is recommended both for students who wish to study towards communicative English for travel and for work, and for students who want to study towards future tertiary education in an English speaking country.
Placement Assessment
On your first day you will have a campus orientation with members of the International Education team. After your orientation you will be taken to the English Language Centre where you will complete a Placement Assessment to assess your English language level and we will talk to you about your study goals. Your assessment result will assist us to place you in a class to suit your personal needs and your study goals. The Placement Assessment includes reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is no pass or fail.
Study at NMIT’s English Language Progamme
19 weeks Certificate in Tertiary Study (Level 4) (English Language)
Increase your English skills, study skills and cultural understanding so you can study successfully at Certificate, Diploma or Degree level in New Zealand at NMIT or another tertiary institution or University. These are also the right programmes for people who want to get the skills to live and work in New Zealand, so you can get a better job.
English Language Requirements: All applicants whose first language is not English must have: an IELTS score of 5.5 – 6.0 Or equivalent.
Other Requirements: Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid visa to study in New Zealand
Certificate in English as an Additional Language (Level 3)
If you are from a non-English speaking background, this programme will help you improve your English language skills for study, work or travel, while studying on a culturally diverse campus. Completion of this certificate provides a pathway to other certificates, diplomas and degrees at NMIT. You will have the language skills required to communicate in most situations with some independence and fluency in order to participate in everyday / social / community, workplace and / or academic English language contexts.
Entry requirements
This programme is open to any applicant from a non-English speaking background who has English skills approaching the level they are enrolling in, is at least 16 years of age, and has a valid visa to study in New Zealand.
The applicant must be capable of reading and writing in their first language*
*Note: In exceptional circumstances, an applicant who does not meet these entry requirements may be accepted onto the programme. This is dependent on the support resources available and is at the discretion of the Programme Area Leader.
