Mount Albert Grammar School (age 13 - 18) Mount Albert
Mount Albert Grammar School warmly welcomes International Students, who participate in every activity in the school. Many have done outstandingly well academically, both in the school and in their further studies at universities in New Zealand and in other countries - every year more than 90% of our international Year 13 graduates go on to university.
The pastoral care of our international students is a major emphasis with enrolment, accommodation (Homestays for boys and girls and boarding hostel for boys) and student support, all organised by the International Department. A Government-certified English Language High School preparation course is available, to allow students to improve their English before moving to mainstream classes.
The School has fine permanent buildings including the classical, original 1922 building, now strengthened and refurbished. The facilities include a pleasant landscaped environment, a computer centre (all students have free access to e-mail and internet), an excellent library, a high quality astronomical telescope, two gymnasiums with fitness centre, squash courts, playing fields, school farm and astrograss tennis/netball courts.
A large aquatic centre is on campus, with two heated indoor swimming pools - a 25-metre competition pool with variable depth, and a leisure pool with wave action and a water slide. Two spa pools, a steam room, a sauna, a pool shop and a food outlet complete the complex.
There are few state-funded schools that boast a boarding establishment. School House was opened in 1927 and has forged a tradition rich in academic, sporting and cultural achievement. School House caters for 100 boys from New Zealand and around the world, all of whom are assisted to grow and fulfil their potential in a safe, structured and caring environment. Five and seven day boarding are catered for, at the same term rate, with fees payable six-monthly in advance. These fees cover three meals a day as well as afternoon tea and supper, laundry and accommodation.
Academic Year & Starting in the Mount Albert Grammar School
The academic life of any school is the main purpose of its being and, indeed, Mount Albert Grammar School prides itself on its academic tradition. The 2012 Ranking of 5th place in the New Zealand Government NZQA Scholarships reflects the school's excellence in academic achievement. A large range of academic subjects is offered, including Horticulture and Agriculture, making use of the school’s unique farm. The School emphasises academic achievement within a caring and supportive environment, and provides its longer-term students with an excellent foundation for University education in New Zealand and overseas. Over 90% of international graduates from Year 13 enter a University.
International English Language Programme :
Students at any level applying to enter the School's International English Language Programme may be accepted at any time of the School year.
Mainstream Classes: Students in Years 9 & 10 may be accepted at the beginning of Term 1, 2 or 3. Students in Years 11, 12, 13 should be in the school at the beginning of Term 1, but may be accepted at the beginning of Terms 2 or 3., but those starting later than February may find it difficult to get the subjects they want to study and will find it more difficult to gain enough credits to gain promotion to the next level the following year. Contact the International Office with any queries about start dates.
All students need to pass tests of English language ability on arrival and if these are not passed then they will be placed in the International English Programme (intensive English course) in the school.
Students will be promoted to mainstream classes when their English meets the minimum level (Years 9, 10 must be at least pre-intermediate level and Years 11, 12, 13 must be at least intermediate level).
Sport & Extracurricular Activities: The school is ranked as New Zealand's number 1 sporting school, regularly winning New Zealand championships in a wide range of sports. There are also 6 sports academies, which offer high-level coaching in Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball and Rugby. Students may take part in music tuition, dramatic and musical productions and join music groups.
