John Paul College (JPC) is a top performing state-integrated Catholic school and caters for students from Year 7 to Year 13. JPC’s enrolment now exceeds 1,100 boys and girls – making it the largest co-educational Catholic School in New Zealand. It is widely respected for its many achievements of excellence in the academic, sporting and cultural spheres and its comprehensive systems of pastoral care and support, ensure that each individual student can flourish to his or her fullest potential.
The school has modern facilities with most of the classrooms rebuilt over the last seven years. The latest addition is a gymnasium and performing arts centre and by the end of 2013, a new technology and arts centre as well as a computer section, will have been completed. WiFi is accessible in the classrooms to enable students to use their digital devices for learning. There is also a dedicated music suite with practice rooms and recording studio. The school has a large grass sports field and nine astro-turf courts for tennis, netball and hockey. Being situated in Rotorua, students can also enjoy the city’s numerous sporting, cultural facilities and clubs including mountain biking, squash, rowing, dance, drama, horse riding, skiing, archery, gymnastics, swimming and water-polo.
The increasing international roll includes approximately 35 students from seven different countries. Successful applicants are usually prioritised over the school’s considerable waiting list. All faiths and backgrounds are welcomed.
Rotorua is a premier international tourist destination which is famous throughout the world for its unique geothermal sites, spectacular scenery, rich Maori culture and vast array of exciting adventure activities. Surrounding the city are sixteen exquisite forest-fringed lakes renowned for their trout fishing and boating. Its world-famous mountain biking venue is a must and the local rivers offer numerous thrilling white water and kayaking adventures.
Cultural programme The Cultural Programme offered at John Paul College is vibrant and strong. Like in sport, students are encouraged to participate in a cultural activity.
Many students also take advantage of the wide range of opportunities in the cultural clubs and organisations that are also offered in Rotorua city.
Study at John Paul College
John Paul College offers an exciting academic programme with a wide range of subjects. The school has high expectations for each individual student’s performance and over the past few years it has prided itself on excellent results.
The curriculum is well structured. In Years 7 and 8, the programme consists of short term/semester courses as well as full year core subjects. The choice of subjects and options grows as the student progresses through the school. In Years 11, 12 and 13, the students are assessed through the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and the Cambridge exams are also offered as an option.
International students can participate in the school’s ESOL programme and in addition, individual or small group tuition is available to those who need extra language support. If English competency is strong enough, then that student is welcome to join the mainstream English classes.
Critical to the student’s success at John Paul College is determining their academic ability and requirements on arrival. Students will then be placed into courses which are tailormade to their needs, and on-going support is provided to ensure positive and successful outcomes.
Sport
John Paul College is widely recognised as a top performing sporting school and its teams and individual students consistently earn regional and national awards and achievements. Annual sports days are held for Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and ‘tabloid games.’ All students are encouraged to participate and gain points for their House Team. The competitions are a mixture of fun as well as serious for those who are intending to represent the school at regional and national competition in these sports.
