New Plymouth Boys’ High School welcomes students from throughout the world. The school is located in New Plymouth in the province of Taranaki. The city is a 40 minute direct flight from Auckland and has a population of 50,000 people.
Taranaki has a blend of natural beauty, with many attractions and activities. It is described as 'real New Zealand' and presents a destination with something for everyone. All year round there is something to see and do. In the winter you can ski on Mount Taranaki and surf the beaches on the same day. New Plymouth and the wider area of Taranaki is one of New Zealand's surfing destination. The beautiful natural environment encourages students to be heavily involved in outdoor activities and the school offers a range of outdoor education courses.
New Plymouth Boys’ High School, a traditional boys secondary school, was established in 1882 with over 1,200 boys enrolled and includes a boarding establishment on site. The school is located on 14 hectares of park-like grounds in the central New Plymouth area and overlooks the sea.
Classrooms are well equipped and includes specialised teaching rooms for Technology, Hospitality and Music. Within the school grounds there is a hockey turf, along with two football fields, two rugby fields, six tennis courts, squash courts and a gymnasium.
The School believes in a holistic education with a wide choice of academic programmes as well as many sporting and cultural activities for students to select from. Students who attend New Plymouth Boys’ High School will get the opportunity to excel academically as well as in the sporting and cultural fields.
New Plymouth Boys’ High School has a New Zealand wide, as well as an international, reputation for excellence, service and achievement. Many of the school's students move onto University study once they have finished their education with us.
The school offers international students the choice of hostel accommodation or residing in the home of a local family.

The New Plymouth Boys’ High School Curriculum
The curriculum seeks to provide a broad based general education, but still provide individual choices.
Year 9: Students have The Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Technology as compulsory subjects. Students are then able to select four half year optional subjects from: Agriculture, Business Studies, Classical Studies/Latin, Computer Science, Digital Media, French, Graphics, Home Economics, Maori, Music, Spanish, Technology Electronics, Technology Metal, Technology Wood and Visual Arts.
Year 10: Students have English, Health, Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Visual Arts as compulsory subjects and then have the option of selecting two half year optional subjects from: Agriculture, Business Studies, Classical Studies/Latin, Computer Science, Digital Media, Graphics, Home Economics, Maori, Music, Spanish, Technology Electronics, Technology Metal, Technology Wood.
Year 11 - Level 1: Students have English, Mathematics and Science or Agriculture and Horticulture as compulsory subjects. They are then required to select six optional subjects with a full year course being worth 2 units and half year 1 unit.
Year 12 - Level 2: Students must take English, as a compulsory subject. They then have to select ten units of optional subjects with a full year course being worth 2 units and half year 1 unit.
Year 13 - Level 3: There are no compulsory subjects at Year 13. Students are required to select twelve units of optional subjects with a full year course being worth 2 units and half year 1 unit.
Outdoor Education: Outdoor education as a subject which is offered from Year 11 - 13, as half year and full year course. At Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education is offered as an optional camp. The Taranaki environment allows students to have the opportunity to develop skills in a wide range of outdoor pursuits including: navigation, rock climbing, kayaking, snowcraft and mountaineering. Students selecting this course may be interested in the Adventure Racing options available.
Sports and Club Activities: New Plymouth Boys’ High School has a proud record of national success in a range of sports and our teams consistently compete in the top league of competitions and tournaments in New Zealand. All major sports are available. International students are encouraged to become involved in sports and cultural activities. It is a great way of integrating into the NPBHS culture.

Surfing in Taranaki: Surfing is a major recreation for many New Plymouth Boys’ High School students and staff, with the Taranaki region known as one of New Zealand's major surfing destination. The nearest surfing beach is five minutes from the school and in 2015 New Plymouth Boys’ High School was the top boys surfing school in New Zealand. While at New Plymouth Boys’ HS, International students are encouraged to give surfing a go. The surf breaks cater for all abilities and the International Department is able to arrange for students to have introductory lessons.
Sailing in Taranaki: Any boy who sails, or wants to sail, is eligible for the NPBHS sailing team. The first event is the Taranaki Secondary Schools Yachting Championships and each boy is able to enter either the Optimist, Starling, or 420 classes. This is an individual event with boys sailing their own boats in their respective classes. Further opportunities exist to travel to Ngaroto as a school team with beginners and more experienced sailors. Here a team is selected to train for the nationals and this team travels to Wellington to have a regatta before the nationals. We have a sail-off amongst Taranaki schools and the winners go to the nationals.
