Belmont Intermediate (age 11 -13), Belmont
Belmont Intermediate is a learning community which focuses on meeting the needs of the emerging adolescent and raising student achievement for all. As a school we are also future focused and understand the need to ensure that students develop key dispositions for life long learning so they can continue to grow and develop as individuals and learners.
Students are presented with a range of academic, cultural and sporting opportunities to promote their individual development. There is an expectation that students will strive for excellence; to be the best that they can be in all their school endeavours.
The school expects high standards of behaviour and positive interaction with adults and peers. Students are expected to aspire to the traditional values of showing respect, taking responsibility for and demonstrating commitment to their learning and acting in a caring way towards others.
Belmont Intermediate is a well-resourced, decile 10 school, with a roll of approximately 550 students, situated on Auckland's North Shore. International students are taught alongside New Zealand students in supportive classroom environments to encourage the development of English language.
As well as this, the school employs a full time ESOL teacher and a teacher-aide to teach students who have English as their second language. Two separate classrooms are provided for the teaching of ESOL programmes, where students are taught English in small group situations for a set period each day. A Korean Counsellor has been employed to assist Korean students and families with school and home concerns. Extensive support is provided to assist students to adapt to the new cultural environment.
International students are integrated in the school with low international student numbers per class leading to enhanced opportunities to make friends and improve language skills.
The school recognises that students are living in an era where knowledge is constantly changing, and to be well prepared for the future, students require strategies for personal adaptation. The school has developed five core competencies to help students become prepared for the future and become life-long learners.
These are:
- Global Citizenship: Knowing about and relating to other people, the environment and the world.
- Collaborative Learner: Knowing how to work with others to achieve a goal.
- Self-Directed and Reflective Learner: Knowing and thinking about their learning.
- Effective Communicator: Knowing how to successfully interact with other people, to gather information and express their ideas effectively.
- Adaptable Thinker: Knowing how to think in different ways to learn effectively and move forward to new challenges.
Belmont Intermediate School fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum. It is taught mainly in homeroom classes with specialist teaching of Technology, the Arts, Science and Japanese. In the homerooms, students are taught English, Mathematics, Physical Health and Wellbeing. Where appropriate some of these are combined into integrated unit studies.
The school recognises that not all students learn at the same pace. There are extension programmes in Mathematics, Science, Sports, the Arts and Technology. Teacher aides and specifically qualified teachers assist students who require learning support.
Specialist classes provide an exciting and often a new learning experience for the students. The class sizes are small to allow for individual attention. Students are grouped across their learning teams and are rotated through the various options.
Japanese is taught in full classes. Belmont offers the following specialist subjects: Art, Hard materials Technology, Food Technology, Japanese, Chinese, Music, Science
